can i have this dance? | jamie drysdale x reader
In which you and Jamie become Troy and Gabriella.
Missing Jamie Drysdale and all of his cuteness, so enjoy this HSM3 inspired blurb!!
————————————————————————
You couldn’t help but feel overly excited at the dark clouds that were starting to cover the sky. After living in California for a year, you had grown accustomed to the lack of rain, but it still made you aggravated. You grew up in a place that had rain on a regular basis and had always loved it.
“Jamie, it’s looking like rain!” You shouted down the hall to your boyfriend. You were curled up near the edge of the couch so that you could look out the window.
Jamie had just woken up from a nap, the loud thunder drawing him from his slumber. He opened his bedroom door and trudged over to the couch, dramatically falling on top of you.
“Yeah, and your rain just woke me up,” he grumbled. You started to poke at his shoulder, which was now uncomfortably in your side.
“Well you can’t miss the rain! This is the most exciting moment of my week, J. I can’t understand how nothing here ever needs rain, it’s so weird,” you trailed off, focus on the window.
Jamie looked up at your hopeful face and smiled at you. He found it so adorable that you were so passionate about the rain. One time up on the roof of his and Trevor’s apartment, he had listened to you describe the way you saw the rain. You saw it as a cleanse, everything becoming drenched in water. It was calming to you, the thunder and lightning only making the spectacle more interesting and attention grabbing.
A soft gasp left your mouth as rain started to fall. You clambered up from the couch, running to the large window to watch it like a little kid.
“Jamie, look!”
Jamie eagerly followed you. You were practically bouncing by the time the rain started to pick up and the lawn outside Jamie’s apartment got wet.
“Now this, this Jamie Drysdale, feels normal,” you laughed. “This feels like home.”
Jamie, a fair bit taller than you, rested his head atop yours and wrapped his arms around you.
“It’s beautiful,” Jamie offered. He couldn’t quite see what you saw when it rained, but he loved trying to understand you, so he was willing to stare out the window a little longer.
You wriggled free from his grasp and spun around the kitchen. “We have to rain dance, Jamie!”
Your eyes were bright as you stared at him. You were sure you looked a little wild-your hair was half tucked in a bun and a large Anaheim Ducks t-shirt covered your body. What you didn’t know was that Jamie thought you looked just as beautiful as ever.
“A rain dance?” He questioned.
You nodded emphatically. “Yes, Jamie. And it means that we have to go outside and be absolutely obnoxious and have the time of our fucking lives, do you understand?”
You didn’t give Jamie any time to really understand before you were tugging on his arm. You both slipped on sandals and before Jamie knew it, you were leading him out his front door, down the steps.
“You’ve seen High School Musical 3, right?” You questioned, slowing your movement to look at Jamie.
He nodded, looking confused as to where you were going with this.
“Well, there’s a scene where Gabriella and Troy sing this song and they dance in the rain and have the best time ever, and I’ve always wanted to do it with someone special,” you said, the giddiness bubbling inside of you.
You ran ahead of him, arms wide to feel the cool water hit your body. Jamie could practically see the happiness radiating from your frame.
“Dance with me, Jamie!”
While this wasn’t Jamie’s preferred activity, he ran out to meet you in the middle of the lawn, abandoning the covering of the doorway. You were in your element.
You found Jamie’s shoulders as you pulled him close to do a pretend slow dance in the rain. You both erupted in giggles at the absurdity of your actions, not caring who could see you outside like fools.
Jamie spun you around and dipped you effortlessly. You danced for a few minutes, practicing your best couple moves with each other.
“Thanks for being crazy with me and pretending we’re the main characters in a teen movie,” you laughed. You smiled as you and Jamie were now quite close, only a few inches separating you from his lips.
“I’d dance in the rain with you any day, Y/N,” Jamie said, kissing you in the middle of the storm.
————————————————————————
This was a random little idea that came to me when it rained the other day!! Hope you enjoyed it!☔️

[ i’ll be home for christmas ] m. mctavish
day ten of malia’s christmas fic marathon
paring : Mason McTavish x fem!reader
summary : Mason brings new girlfriend (Y/N) to dinner at his parents’ house for Christmas
warning(s) : none
author’s note : first time writing for mason so i hope it isn’t terrible
༺═──────────────═༻
The idea of going to Canada with Mason was exciting.
Now it’s just terrifying now that it’s reality.
They’ve only been dating for a handful of months but he has been wanting to introduce (Y/N) to his parents since they made everything official. It was a four month talking phase slash situationship then in September when he came back to Anaheim for the season, things were made official.
That’s how she ended up in a town near Ottawa on Christmas Day.
She currently sits in front of Mason’s childhood home. It’s the house the McTavish family moved into when they moved to Canada from Switzerland when Mason was eight. Her eyes are on the house as Mason turns the car off.
“What if they don’t like me?” she questions as she turns to look at her boyfriend. “Do they even know about me?”
Mason looks over at her when she asks the second question. “Yeah, they know about you,” he replies. “My brother knows too. He’s the one that let it slip to our parents that I was bringing you home for Christmas. I can tell you that they’re excited to meet you.”
She isn’t convinced.
(Y/N) knows she isn’t like the other girls that Mason has brought home. She knows she isn’t even like the girls he has dated in the past. She isn’t even a blonde haired, blue eyed Instagram model. She doesn’t have some cool job and she lives in a shoebox apartment that had a very small closet for a bedroom.
His parents aren’t going to think she’s right for him. Hell, they might even think she’s trying to use him for money.
She didn’t go through a four month situationship just for money.
“I just don’t think they’ll like me, Mase,” she repeats. She decides to voice her concerns. “I barely have enough money to survive. I’m not as beautiful as the other girls you’ve probably brought to dinner to meet them. I doubt they’ll think I’m right for you. They’ll hate me.”
Mason shakes his head and leans on the center console. Their eyes meet and Mason’s are soft, sincere. “I know you know that I don’t care about how much you make as a bartender,” he tells her. “You know I don’t care what your job is. You’re more gorgeous than any other girl I’ve brought home. Once they see how happy you make me and how in love with you I am, they’ll think you’re perfect for me.”
A pout forms on her lips and Mason traces her bottom lip when he reaches across the console. “I still don’t believe that,” she admits.
“If you feel uncomfortable at all, then let me know,” he says. “We’ll leave and go back to my apartment, okay?”
She nods. “Okay.”
He smiles and kisses her pout. “Ready to meet my parents and brother?” he asks.
“No, but let’s go,” she replies. “Hopefully they drink wine because that’s the only gift I brought for them.”
Mason laughs, “I promise they like wine. They’ve always liked wine. It’s okay.”
Again, she isn’t convinced.
Ready or not, (Y/N) grabs the gift bag that contains the bottle of red wine that she bought for Mason’s parents and gets out of the car. She walks around the car and grabs her boyfriend’s hand with her free hand.
Together, they walk up to the front door. The cold wind hits her in the face and whips through her brown hair. It’s so cold and there’s snow on the ground. Two things that an Anaheim born girl is not used to. She’s very much out of her comfort zone right now.
Mason knocks a few times on the door before he opens it. He walks inside and pulls his girlfriend in behind him.
“Hello?” he calls out. “We’re here.”
Mason’s older brother comes running into the foyer from the living room as they take their coats off. “Oh my God,” he gasps. “She’s real. I didn’t think she was real.”
A couple comes into the foyer right after his brother says something. Definitely Mason’s parents. The four of them all look so similar. “Mason,” his mother says. “It’s about time we got to meet her. She’s beautiful.”
“Hi,” (Y/N) says. “I, um, have a gift for you. Mason told me you guys really like wine so here’s a bottle. I’m not sure what kind of wine but it’s I’m a red wine drinker so I got you guys my favorite.”
Mrs. McTavish smiles and takes the bag from her. “That is so sweet of you,” she says when the bag is in her hand. “Thank you. You didn’t have to.”
(Y/N) takes a step back and stands against Mason’s side. “It felt weird to not bring something,” she admits. “Hope you like it.”
“Come in,” Mr. McTavish says. “Get comfortable. I’ll pour us glasses of wine while dinner finishes up in the oven.”
Mason’s parents walk into the kitchen. His brother follows them while Mason guides (Y/N) into the living room.
They take a seat on the couch and Mason scoots closer to his girlfriend. He drapes an arm around her shoulders. She looks up at him and settles against his side. “Feel any better yet?” he asks.
“A little,” she sighs. “Ask me when we leave.”
Mason’s family walk into the living room. (Y/N) is handed a glass of wine, and so is Mason. She forgets that he only needs to be 18 to drink in Canada so his parents are okay with their 20-year-old son drinking a glass of wine in the house.
His brother sits with them on the couch while his parents sit adjacent to them on the loveseat. “So, how did you meet Mason?” Mrs. McTavish asks.
“His friends introduced us earlier this year at the end of the season,” she tells them. “We became friends then a few months ago when he came back to Anaheim for this season, he asked me to be his girlfriend and the rest is history.”
“So you’re from Anaheim then?” Mason’s dad questions.
She sips her wine and nods in response until she swallows the sip. “Born and raised,” she tells them. “I’ve lived there all 21 years I’ve been alive. Went to school at UCLA too. I’ve lived in California my whole life.”
His parents get into how Mason was born in Switzerland and how they moved back to Canada when he was eight. She pretends to listen because she heard all of this from Mason himself when they started talking in May. Mason even chimes in a couple of times.
Dinner is ready soon after, followed by dessert. (Y/N) tells them about her life and what she does for work at the moment. She tells them about her future plans to go into education one day and teach at a middle school or high school.
They seem very impressed.
“Glad to see you found a girl who knows what she wants, Mason,” his mother says to him. “Goals are a great thing to have. I hope you can go into education, (Y/N).”
She smiles and looks up at Mason.
Maybe she’s convinced now that his parents like her.
Her nerves got the best of her, and a past of dating multiple guys whose parents didn’t like her. She’s glad that Mason’s parents actually like her though. She sees Mason in her life until she dies.
She isn’t like the other girls Mason’s brought home, but that doesn’t mean that his parents wouldn’t like her. They absolutely do.
“Thank you both for coming,” Mr. McTavish says while (Y/N) and Mason gather their things to head back to his apartment a few miles away. “(Y/N), you’re welcome here any time.”
“Thank you for having me, Mr. and Mrs. McTavish,” she replies.
His mother pulls her into a hug. “That’s Dale and Christine to you,” she tells (Y/N) with a laugh. “Maybe we‘ll come see you and Mason down in Anaheim one day.”
“We’d really like that,” Mason says. “Maybe we’ll come by in the morning before we head back to California.”
“Of course,” Dale says. “See you both soon.”
They head back to Mason’s car and (Y/N) is giddy with happiness. Mason notices because he asks, “Good visit?”
She looks at him and wraps her arms around his shoulders. She might be slightly tipsy from the wine she has consumed over the last few hours. “Best visit,” she replies. “I love your family.”
“They love you too,” he tells her. “My mom was so happy to talk to you. My dad was so interested in how you became a hockey fan. They adore you, (Y/N). Just like I said they would.”
“Can we come home for Christmas every year?” she asks as she gets into the car. “I mean, your home. Canada.”
Mason smiles and says, “We can come home for Christmas every year.”
Home. Canada might be her second home at this point. She better get used to the snow and cold wind.

new perspective
tracklist
<<play last current song play next>>
featured lyric(s): "you and all of your new perspective now, wish i could shut it in a closet and drag you back down."
parental advisory: mentions of cheating
when you started dating jack in sophomore year there was no denying that he would end up playing professional hockey. and when you were just as serious halfway through senior year you decided you would follow him anywhere; and anywhere ended up being new jersey. jack was playing with the ndtp and you were at johns hopkins studying psychology but when he was drafted it was easy enough to transfer to rutgers. when you got there you were assigned a dorm but started helping ellen help jack look for an apartment. throughout the process jack insisted that you found something you liked too because he wanted you to move in with him. and despite constantly asking “are you sure?”, the two of you found a nice two bedroom apartment halfway between his practice facility and the prudential center but still close to campus for you.
and things were going well. jack was living his dream and you were on your way to living yours. classes were going well and you went to games whenever you could. you were there for his debut and went to dinner with ellen, jim and luke after. and you were there for his first goal in a game against the canucks of all teams. you went out for dinner with his family after that game as well, but dinner was a shorter affair because the team wanted to take jack out to celebrate. everyone understood though and it worked out because ellen and jim got time to themselves while you, quinn, and luke got ice cream at a place near your apartment. at the end of the night you sent them back to the hotel in an uber and welcomed a slightly intoxicated jack back home. “you know i love you right?” jack asked as you were shuttling him to the bathroom. “yeah jacky, i know.” you respond, giggling as he turns to hug you, making the entire process of getting ready for bed harder. “okay good.” he says “gotta make sure you still do after tonight.” hearing that you pause slightly, not having a clue what he was talking about. but you don’t think too into it, assuming he’s referring to being drunk and needy.
but everything comes to light a few weeks later. the devils are on the road in california and after a game against anaheim you keep the tv on in the background as you clean your apartment. jack had texted that he was giving an interview after the game and you wanted to hear it. the game had been good for him, an assist and a goal late in the third that led to a devils win. the interview started normally, he was congratulated on the game and asked about the team; but the question that stook out to you was when the interviewer asked what being in the league had been like so far. his answer? “it’s been really good, it’s like i have a whole new perspective on everything.” as far as you were aware jack’s outlook on life hadn’t changed all that much, but you pushed it aside thinking that if something was really important jack would tell you himself.
you were mistaken though because the next morning you woke up to what felt like hundreds of texts from everyone you knew. the one that stood out the most though was from pk subban. he had almost adopted the two of you when jack started with the team and had been there for everything you might need. the text simply read “i’m so sorry. i promise we tried to stop him.” sitting up you rubbed your eyes, confused, and scroll through the rest of your messages. they all loosely said the same things and contained the same screenshots. one from nico “he was drunk but that doesn’t excuse it. i’m here if you need anything.” a couple from your friends back home “he was stupid for that, call us asap.” and a couple in the groupchat you had with all of the hughes brothers. luke had seen it first, in the background of someone’s since deleted instagram story and texted quinn to confirm before immediately texting you. the message was simple, a screenshot captioned “jack what the hell?” quinn had responded with something similar and texted you separately to let you know that he wouldn’t choose jack’s side (if that’s what it came to). and jack hadn’t said anything.
for a full day after he cheated jack had no communication with you. no “i’m sorry” or “it was a mistake” not even an “i don’t regret it.” just radio silence. finally, after his third west coast game, on his way to the plane back home he texted “can we talk when i get back?” sighing to yourself you liked the message and went about your day. you weren’t exactly looking forward to the conversation that would inevitably end in a breakup. you had talked to your friends and parents, and everyone said that ending the relationship would probably be for the best. so, taking that into account, while he was on his flight across the country you were packing all of your things into suitcases and storage bins to move into the dorms. your roommate was in a bunch of your classes and when you didn’t initially move in she let you know that the room was always there if you needed a break.
when most of your stuff was moved you sat on the couch, waiting for jack’s return home. and finally, just past one, you heard his key in the door. you listened as he took his shoes off and placed his keys on the rack ellen made you get. you followed his path further into the apartment via the familiar sounds of his routines until he eventually appeared in front of you. you nodded your hello and motioned for jack to sit on the couch. “so…” he started, trailing off and fidgeting with his fingers. “so?” you prompted, adding “you cheated on me” when jack seemed at a loss for words. “i’m sorry.” jack finally says. “i was drunk and wasn’t thinking. i shouldn’t have.” you nod, expecting him to continue, to say anything that feels genuine but that never comes. “i think we should break up.” you say, not wanting to drag the conversation out any further. jack’s head shoots up to look at you, eyes wide in shock. “what?” he asks. “why?” you almost laugh, “what do you mean ‘why’ jack?” you ask. “you kissed someone else.” at that jack shakes his head “i was drunk y/n, it can’t be that big of a deal.” then you can’t even be bothered to hold back your laugh. “it’s a pretty big deal to me jack.” you say, not getting how he doesn’t understand. “what if i kissed someone else?”
“that’s different” jack say and you snap. “how the fuck is it different jack? how is me kissing someone else different than you kissing someone else? why is it okay for you to cheat but i can’t even bring it up?” you ask, standing up. “is this what you meant in that interview? is this your new perspective? whatever jack. we’re over.” hearing that makes it real to jack, “what? no, come on, let me fix this.” he says, standing up to face you again. and looking into his eyes you see pieces of the man you fell in love with, but no matter how much you want to cave you know you can’t. “you can’t fix it jack.” you admit, sighing softly, “i wish i could shut this all in the hall closet and drag you back down with me but i can’t. you will always be my first everything jack and i wouldn’t trade it for the world. i think this is gonna be good for both of us, and it’s not like you’ll never see me again. we’ll figure it out eventually, we’ll just be apart while we do it.”

Disneyland Vacation Rentals Anaheim
The Ultimate Guide to Disneyland Vacation Rentals in Anaheim
Introduction
Disneyland Vacation Rentals Anaheim, a premier accommodation option for those seeking a magical and unforgettable experience in the heart of Southern California
Disneyland in Anaheim, California, is a dream destination for families and Disney enthusiasts from around the world. While planning a trip to the Magic Kingdom, one crucial decision is where to stay. While Disney's on-site hotels are a popular choice, many visitors are turning to vacation rentals for a more comfortable and cost-effective option. In this article, we'll explore the world of Disneyland vacation rentals in Anaheim, offering you the ultimate guide to finding the perfect home away from home.
Benefits of Vacation Rentals
Space and Comfort
One of the most significant advantages of opting for Disneyland Vacation Rentals in Anaheim is the ample space and comfort it provides. Unlike hotel rooms, vacation rentals typically offer multiple bedrooms, a living room, a fully equipped kitchen, and often a private pool. This extra space is a blessing for families, allowing parents and kids to have their own rooms, and it offers the comfort of a true home away from home.
Cost-Effective
Vacation rentals can be cost-effective, especially for larger groups or extended stays. You can save money on dining by preparing meals in your own kitchen and enjoy the convenience of laundry facilities. When you split the cost with family or friends, the per-person cost can be significantly lower than booking multiple hotel rooms.
Privacy
Many vacation rentals offer a level of privacy that hotels simply can't match. Whether it's a secluded villa, a cozy cottage, or a condominium, you can enjoy your own private space without the hustle and bustle of hotel corridors and lobbies.
Local Experience
Staying in a vacation rental allows you to experience Anaheim like a local. You can explore local markets, dine at hidden gems, and immerse yourself in the community, all while being within easy reach of Disneyland's magic.
Types of Vacation Rentals
Condos and Apartments
Condos and apartments are a popular choice for smaller groups and couples. They offer all the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay, often including full kitchens, living areas, and bedrooms. Many are located just a short drive or even within walking distance of Disneyland.
Vacation Homes
Vacation homes range from cozy cottages to spacious villas, providing ample space for larger groups or families. They often come with private pools and outdoor spaces, making them perfect for relaxation and family gatherings.
Townhouses
Townhouses offer a balance between space and affordability. They are suitable for families who want more room than a typical hotel room but don't need a full-sized vacation home. Townhouses often come with communal facilities like pools and fitness centers.
Luxury Rentals
If you're looking for a touch of extravagance, Anaheim has a selection of luxury vacation rentals. These properties boast top-tier amenities, stunning interiors, and the highest level of comfort. Some even feature game rooms, home theaters, and exquisite outdoor areas.
How to Find the Perfect Disneyland Vacation Rental
Plan Ahead
Start your search well in advance of your trip. Popular vacation rentals near Disneyland tend to get booked quickly, especially during peak seasons. By planning ahead, you'll have a better chance of securing the perfect rental for your group.
Utilize Online Platforms
Websites and apps like Airbnb, Vrbo, and Booking.com are excellent resources for finding vacation rentals. You can browse through various options, read reviews, and compare prices. These platforms also offer secure booking processes and customer support.
Set Your Budget
Determine your budget before you start searching for a vacation rental. While rentals can be cost-effective, prices can vary greatly depending on the size, location, and amenities. Be clear about how much you're willing to spend, so you can narrow down your options.
Read Reviews
Reading reviews from previous guests is crucial in assessing the quality of a vacation rental. It provides insights into the property's condition, cleanliness, and the responsiveness of the host. Look for properties with positive feedback and responsive hosts.
Communicate with Hosts
Don't hesitate to reach out to hosts with any questions or concerns you may have. Effective communication with the host can ensure that your expectations are met and that you have a smooth and enjoyable stay.
Check Amenities
Pay close attention to the amenities offered by the rental. Make sure it has everything you need for a comfortable stay, whether it's a well-equipped kitchen, a private pool, or entertainment options for the kids.
Conclusion
Choosing the right Disneyland vacation rental in Anaheim can make your trip truly magical. With the space, comfort, and local experience they provide, vacation rentals are becoming a preferred choice for many travelers. Whether you opt for a condo, vacation home, townhouse, or a luxurious rental, planning ahead and using online platforms will help you find the perfect home away from home. So, get ready to experience Disneyland and all its enchantment while enjoying the comforts of a vacation rental in Anaheim.
Thank you for sparing your precious time!

VRV
A residence with many windows, especially large glass panels, has a particular allure to people. Most of us would agree that a home with floor-to-ceiling windows is more desirable than one with fewer and smaller panes. They offer visual access to the outside, an abundance of natural light, and the ability to provide fresh air and air circulation. Woman Injured In Stanton County Accident
Driver fatigue might cause someone to nod off behind the wheel. It doesn't take much sleep deprivation to enhance your chances of falling asleep while driving. According to studies, people who slept less than six hours a night were more likely to report falling asleep behind the wheel than those who slept more than six hours. Driving when sleepy is a widespread occurrence and a severe threat to road safety. Fatigue can cause slower reaction times and difficulty concentrating. Getting enough rest is one of the most effective methods to avoid a driving disaster. If you find yourself frequently blinking, yawning, or nodding your head, it is time to get off the road.

Chapter 6
The sun shined brightly through the bedroom window. Two women were asleep in a bed.
“Good morning, Rachael.”
Rachael jumped. She forgot that there was a person in her house. Who is in my house?! Oh no. I’m about to be raped or murdered.
Penny spoke more softly. “Good morning.”
Rachael was awake enough to catch up to what was happening and she remembered all the details again. That voice was Penny. Penny had spent the night. Rachael had only 1 bed in this house right now. So Penny had woken up next to her. No danger. It’s just Penny. Penny is safe. Penny is in my bed. PENNY IS IN MY BED. The thought was partly terrifying and partly exciting. Her co-worker of several years and best friend had slept in the same bed as her. How do normal people act with a hot girl in their bed? A hot girl. Rachael’s mind repeated the phrase again. Why did she say that? Penny had said she was bisexual. She remembered being stunned by seeing Penny in her pajamas last night. Penny was hot. Rachael liked how Penny looked.
“You’re right, Penny.” Rachael’s voice was a little deeper, having just woken up. “I am bi.”
Rachael turned over to look at her friend’s face.
“And I admit now. You, Penny, a girl, are hot to me.”
“I KNEW it!” Penny smiled and let out a soft squeal. “We could date each other, you know. That’d be fun.”
Rachael was blushing again. “No. Penny! I’m only just now finding this out about myself. I mean… it would be, I guess, pretty fun to date you…”
“Exactly.” Penny kissed Rachael gently on the forehead.
“Palpitations. PALPITATIONS!” Rachael blushed yet again. “We’re… we’re co-workers, though. You’re kind of my boss.”
“No. Mr. Pendleton is your boss. I mean, I kind of have some influence over you, but… I don’t know. It’s not like everybody has to know.”
Penny got out of bed.
“We should get dressed and start the day.” Penny grabbed the bottom of her pajama shirt and slowly started to pull it up. “Should I change... right... here?”
“Oh my god!” Rachael threw her head under the covers and Penny laughed.
“You are the most adorable thing. I’m not going to change in front of you... Yet. I would melt your brain for the rest of the day if I did that. Wouldn’t I?”
“Why are you torturing me with your beautiful body?!?!” Rachael was still hidden under the covers.
“Because I know I can now. And it’s fun. I’ll wear my work clothes from yesterday. I don’t think I can fit in your clothes after all. I have boobs. You have less boobs.”
“Thank you. I only have 2 casual outfits anyway. They’re a little small on me, so you would just…” Rachael daydreamed about what Penny would look like in her white tanktop and denim shorts. “Yeah.”
From the bathroom, Penny continued the conversation.
“My voluptuous figure would pour out of it like champagne? Which is a polite way to say I’m fatter than you.”
Rachael quickly corrected her. “You’re not fat. No. I didn’t mean…”
“I’m kidding. I don’t think I’m fat. I like how I look. There.”
Penny emerged from the bathroom back in her work clothes.
“We’re definitely going to my house so I can change into more comfortable clothes, and for your sake, less attractive clothes.” Penny smiled.
“That’d be nice. I’d really like to stop thinking about you that way.”
“I don’t mind it. You’re pretty, too, you know. You do need to get dressed, though, sleepyhead. And don’t strip in front of me. I’m not ready to have sex with you.”
Rachael blushed again. “I’m so sorry. I don’t know what came over me. You told me to change and my brain was like ‘Must obey. Must change.’ You… You can do things to my brain that no one else has ever done before.”
Rachael picked up her tanktop and shorts to go change.
“I kind of had a feeling I was able to do that. Even when we first met, you seemed to have this kind of… awe towards me. That’s why I want to see that you’re well taken care of. You’re too precious to get hurt.”
“Aww.” Rachael was getting dressed in the bathroom now. “Thank you for caring so much about me.”
“Caring for you has this weird… automatic instinct for me, too. When you got outed in Anaheim I didn’t hesitate. I just ripped you out of there as fast as possible. I had to protect my girl.”
“That’s one of the many reasons I love having you as a friend, Penny. You’re just amazing like that.”
Rachael opened the bathroom door. Penny looked over her.
“I love it. You look so ‘White girl.’” Penny smiled. “But seriously, though, you are super cute. I can’t remember the last time I saw you in street clothes. We both work too much.”
“Why can’t I make you melt like you made me melt? That’s not fair.” Rachael started cleaning out her purse so it only contained the essentials for the day.
“I’m immune to your powers of hotness. Mwa ha ha. We’ll take my car for our shopping trip today.”
“Sounds good. I don’t like driving much.”
The two went downstairs to Penny’s car. Rachael locked the front door behind her. Penny’s apartment was in downtown Denver. It was a small apartment near Sloan’s Lake. It was a 25 minute drive from Rachael’s house to Penny’s apartment. They talked for the whole drive. Since they were finally having a conversation outside of the workplace again, they had a whole list of things to talk about. Penny questioned Rachael about being bi, but Rachael’s answers were often just ‘I don’t know.’ Rachael wanted to talk about that topic more with her friend, but she was still trying to process it all internally and needed lighter topics while her mind digested her new reality.
When they walked into her apartment a few minutes later, Rachael thought Penny’s apartment was wonderful. It was recently remodeled and looked luxurious on the inside. Penny had just the right amount of decoration. It was all tasteful, elegant and modern. Some of the art on the walls was video game themed, but still fit the styling of the other modern decorations.
“I didn’t know you played video games.” Rachael said, as they toured the apartment.
“Occasionally. I like the art more than actually playing.”
“I’m disappointed in the amount of mess, though. You said your home life was a mess. This is a fantastic mess, Penny.”
Penny pointed at her head. “This home. My personal life. My life choices at home. I didn’t mean my house was a mess.”
Rachael looked in her bathroom and noticed a dildo on the floor.
“See? Dammit.” Penny quickly shoved the dildo in a drawer, embarrassed.
Rachael teased her now. “Oh no. A dildo. Penny has NEEDS!”
They both laughed.
“Look, kid. I don’t need your sass.” Penny joked.
They ended the tour in Penny’s bedroom. There was another dildo on the bed.
“Holy cow. You are the horniest woman I know! Do you have a dildo in every room?”
Now Penny blushed as she stashed another dildo in a drawer. “I have a high libido, okay? Would you get out of here so I can change, you brat?”
Rachael laughed. “Yes ma’am.”
Penny changed while Rachael wandered the apartment, taking in all the sights, sounds, and smells of the private life of Penny De LaCruz. At first glance, the apartment seemed normal enough. A bookshelf in the living room held several books that focused on the artwork of video games. The walls were decorated nicely with stylized video game art. Penny had turned on music in her room. Rachael didn’t recognize the artist, but she heard a strong female vocalist singing. The air carried a hint of coconut and vanilla from wax warmers in other rooms. The apartment was kept clean, an easy task, since Penny was only here to sleep most of the time.
“There. How do I look?”
Penny came into the living room wearing denim jeans and a loose fitting short sleeved shirt. The jeans had a tear mid-thigh, obviously designed that way. On her feet were pink and grey sneakers with ankle socks.
“Beautiful. And I don’t go nuts when I look at you, now! A+. 5 stars.”
Penny laughed. “Let’s go shopping, then.”
They left the apartment and drove to a nearby home decor store to begin their shopping trip. This store would most likely have the lamp, nightstands and mirror they wanted. They walked inside and quickly found the lamp aisle.
“Here you go.” Penny said sarcastically. She pointed to an antique lamp that was brand new, yet looked ancient. “This is adult enough for you, right?”
“Please don’t put that in my house. Ew. I can’t believe people buy some of this stuff.” Rachael’s attention was drawn further down the aisle where a large floor lamp with multiple arms branched out. The small shades over each bulb were brightly colored with bright silver arms going back to its base.
“That’s pretty.”
“Penny! I want it! I know it’s not a nightstand lamp, but I want it! I am so getting this.”
Rachael loaded the large box into their cart, a big smile on her face.
They continued to walk around and shop, getting twice as many things as they came for. They were nearly done shopping at this store when a man walked up behind Rachael.
“Hey. How are you?” The man said.
“Good. Thanks. You?” Rachael turned and looked over the man, checking to see if she was supposed to recognize him, but she didn’t.
“I’m good. I just wanted to let you know there’s a huge sale happening behind this building.”
He didn’t give anyone time to respond.
“Let’s head back there and check it out. They have this same lamp for 90% off. We have to hurry, though, or they’ll sell it.”
Penny tried to cut in. “It’s behind…” He cut her off.
“Yeah, it’s behind the store. We have to go right now. We can’t miss this deal. They probably have everything in your cart back there. Let’s just go.”
He reached out and grabbed Rachael’s arm.
Faster than Rachael could blink, Penny was behind him and had a switchblade knife to his throat.
“Let her go. Now.” Penny hissed.
“Fuck, man.” He dropped her arm. “It’s just a sale, shit. Fuckin’ ungrateful bitches.”
Penny pointed the knife at him as he backed away.
“Fuckin’ crazy ungrateful bitches.”
“Fuck off, asshole!” Penny roared. “Let’s go.”
Penny put one hand on Rachael’s back and the other hand on the cart. Before Rachael had a second to think, they were at the checkout.
“There’s a man in this store who grabbed my friend. He said there’s a sale happening behind the store? I think he wanted to take her.” Penny explained what happened to the slightly terrified cashier. Rachael began to shake a little.
“I’ll get security.” The clerk talked quietly. She picked up the phone and made a page over the intercom. “Cleanup on aisle 42.”
The store was fairly large, but there was no aisle 42. Within seconds, a security officer was by their side.
“Are you ladies alright?” The officer quickly looked at the girls, then around at their surroundings.
“Yes, sir.” Penny said. “Some crazy white guy said there’s a sale happening behind the store and tried to take my friend. He’s about my height, crazy hair, needed to shave.”
The security officer quickly got their information from them and escorted them out to their car. He assured them they would check the security cameras and someone would be in touch to ‘resolve the issue’. Penny knew there wasn’t much they could do, but they loaded the stuff and they were safe in Penny’s car again.
Rachael sobbed.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart. I’m so sorry. I know that was scary for you. I’m kinda terrified myself. Are you okay?”
“I’m *sniffle* I’m okay. *sob* You! You you you! With the knife and the guy!” Rachael continued sobbing again.
“Me?”
“My girlfriend is my bodyguard!” Rachael threw her arms around Penny, squeezing her tight.
“Bodyguard? Girlfriend? I mean…”
“You were SO BRAVE! You told the mean man to go away and he DID! And you OWNED HIM! You were like WOOSH! And that made him leave! You’re my big strong protector!!!” Rachael sobbed some more.
“Oh, kiddo.” Penny stroked Rachael’s hair gently. “It’s okay now. We’re okay.”
They hugged for a few more minutes. Penny managed to pry Rachael off and buckled her up. She drove to a nearby restaurant for lunch and ice cream. They used the drive through and ate in the car.
“Okay.” Rachael licked her ice cream cone, then let out a shaky breath. She was still reeling from what had happened. “So that happened.”
“I hate men.” Penny stared into the distance. Her face seemed to suggest she was imagining strangling many different men.
“Me too.”
“Are you going to be okay shopping, or do you just want to go home? And what about clubbing tonight?”
“I don’t want to spoil your fun.” Rachael looked disappointed.
“Sweetheart, some stranger just tried to grab you and do who knows what. If you want to go home, I have no problem taking you home. We do need to make at least 2 more stops, though. But I want to pack a bag to spend one more night at your house and then get something from one more store.”
“I still want to go to that club tonight. But I don’t think I want to shop anymore. I’m pretty much done shopping for the weekend. I have groceries being delivered on Tuesday, so that’s already covered. I basically got everything I need. I’m still okay to do other stuff.”
“Are you sure, Rachael?”
“Yeah. As much as this whole situation sucked, I don’t want men running my life, either.”
“Amen to that. Okay, kiddo. Finish your food, then buckle up. We’ve got places to go.”

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time Pt 4 - Morgan Rielly
Type: roommates to lovers, Y/N insert shorts
Requested: No
Warnings: none
(Y/N = Your name, no POV change this chapter. It’s all in Morgan’s POV)
A/N: this is mostly just fluff, but very happy stuff, a lot lighter than the last chapter.
More than anything, Morgan regretted falling asleep on the ride home. That first week living with Y/N had left him with more questions than answers about his new roommate, and the guys were never any help. It was a constant stream of “that’s just Y/N” or “yeah she does that sometimes”, without any real explanation as to why. She was always working, even when she was at home. The three bags that she lugged to and from the school with her every day had appeared to weigh her down significantly, but now he was wondering if it was just the stress of worrying about the kids.
He was ashamed to admit that he had never really thought of teaching as a stressful profession; going to school 5 days a week from 7-3 didn’t seem that hard until he saw just how much Y/N was doing when she wasn’t at the school. Every night she sat on the floor of the living room for hours, baseball turned on in the background as she created things for her classroom or weeded through forms and papers he didn’t think could understand even if she tried to explain them. He had asked once what she was doing, but she’d used so many acronyms in the span of one sentence that he was afraid to ask her to explain what they meant.
Those few hours on the beach really gave him an opportunity to understand where Y/N was coming from, and why it looked like she held the weight of the world on her shoulders. In some ways, he guessed that she kind of did. So yeah, he regretted falling asleep and not getting the chance to ask her for more information.
It was almost noon by the time he managed to get himself out of bed, and he’d only moved because he heard voices from outside, one of which potentially belonged to Hamilton. “It’s been good, Doug,” Y/N was saying as he walked to his bedroom door, “he’s a sweet guy.” He couldn’t hear Hamilton’s quiet response, but he heard Y/N’s next sentence clearly. “I’ve actually been thinking about telling him he could stay for the season if he wants. That way he doesn’t have to worry about moving once you guys really get into the season.” Morgan stopped short of the door. Did she really mean that? It would make his life so much easier, and he hadn’t really been looking very hard for a place either. Hamilton and Y/N turned as Morgan came out of his room, and the first thing that he noticed was how Y/N’s Y/E/C eyes brightened when she saw him. She really did have beautiful eyes.
“Heya, sleepyhead,” she joked with a laugh. “We were just taking bets on if you were gonna sleep all day.” Y/N was sitting on the counter, a large mug of coffee in her hands and her hair loose around her. Doug was leaning on the opposite counter, holding one of the muffins Y/N had made a few days prior in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. “Sup, Mo. I was just telling Y/N that we’re having a little cookout tonight at Svechy’s place as a ‘happy hockey season’ party. You’re both coming, attendance mandatory.” Y/N looked like she was about to protest, but Hamilton held up a hand to stop her. “Kat said you’re coming, no excuses. She also said to make your chili.” Hamilton looked back at Morgan and smiled. “Y/N here apparently makes phenomenal chili, and Kat’s decided that we all need to experience it.”
Y/N jumped off the counter with a sigh. “Well if I’m making chili I need to go grocery shopping. It needs to sit as long as possible, since that asshole didn’t give me enough warning to make it last night.” She stomped into her bedroom, throwing the door shut a little bit dramatically. Both Morgan and Hamilton looked at the door and then each other before bursting into laughter. Hamilton stepped forward, clapping Morgan on the shoulder. “Alright man, I’ll leave you with that mess. See you tonight. 6 o’clock. Y/N knows where to go.” Morgan nodded and fist-bumped his captain. Hamilton let himself out of the apartment, and Morgan went back into his room to get dressed.
By the time he came back out, Y/N was gathering reusable bags and still muttering under her breath. “Can I come with you?” Morgan asked, stepping back into the living room. Y/N turned, and Morgan was pretty sure his jaw dropped. She was wearing a simple little navy dress and her Red Sox hat, a pair of white Converse on her feet, and she looked absolutely incredible. He had never realized how tan she really was, probably from all of her time at the beach, but the tank of the dress really showed it off. “Yeah, sure.” Y/N’s answer snapped him back into reality, and he shook his head as he threw on a pair of sneakers.
Their walk to the farmers market was full of a pointless argument about the best junk food, and Morgan had a feeling he was never going to win this argument. “Chips are nowhere near the best kind of junk food, Morgan, what the fuck?” Y/N looked at him incredulously as they reached a crosswalk, and Morgan stared back at her stubbornly. “Oh, and shitty Dominos pizza is?” he threw back sarcastically. “Yes! Yes shitty pizza is better than chips. Nothing tastes better than shitty pizza when you’ve been eating really healthy.” Y/N gestured with her hands as she spoke, something Morgan was beginning to notice she did a lot. They turned onto the street the farmers market was on, and Morgan forgot his response. The street was bustling, filled with people selling everything from produce to breads to candles and flowers. Y/N headed straight for a vegetable truck with purpose, and Morgan followed close behind her.
“Ms. Y/N!” The owner shouted as they walked up, “How are you, honey?” The man was old, his hands tan and spotted from years in the sun, and his accent was thick. Morgan liked him immediately. “Hello, Mr. Mason. I’m good, how are you today?” Mason grinned at Y/N and grabbed her hands, squeezing them gently. “I’m great now that my favorite customer is back. What can I get for you today?” Y/N reached into her bag and pulled out a mesh produce bag. “I need a whole bunch of peppers today. What have you got for me?” Morgan followed behind the pair as they began surveying his produce, smiling back at the older man when he looked back at Morgan. “I have some bell peppers, jalapenos, anaheims, and poblanos. Would those work?” Y/N nodded enthusiastically. “Those are perfect, actually! I’m making chili, and those are all the peppers I would normally use.” She gathered up a few of each pepper, and walked with Mason to check out. Morgan continued to follow, and jumped when Mason addressed him suddenly.
“I hope you’re treating my girl right, son. She’s a good one.” Y/N’s face was priceless when she registered what the older man had said, and she jumped in before Morgan could respond. “Oh, no, Morgan and I are just friends. He’s a teammate of Kat’s boyfriend. Do you remember Kat? My old roommate?” Mason nodded, clearly remembering the feisty girl that used to be by Y/N’s side every weekend. “Yes, I remember her. Tell her I’m upset she hasn’t come by for my strawberries lately, will you honey?” Y/N grinned at the man, and Morgan caught himself staring at her again. It was becoming a problem, but he couldn’t help it. When she smiled, it seemed like the whole world brightened for a little while. It was one of those smiles that was totally infectious. He was brought back to earth when Mason was waving at him, telling the pair to come again soon. Morgan managed some kind of goodbye, and then they were walking again.
They didn’t turn back in the direction of the apartment, and they didn’t speak again until Y/N stopped outside Raleigh Provisions. “So I need to run inside the grocery store and buy some crushed tomatoes and other ingredients I couldn’t get at the market. Would you mind waiting outside with the peppers while I run in?” Morgan nodded, and Y/N was heading inside the store before his next breath. She was back outside quickly, carrying another one of her reusable bags. “Thanks,” she said, taking her peppers back, “I wouldn’t normally stop in there, because it’s a lot more expensive than going to Target or even Harris Teeter, but I needed to get this stuff quickly. Part of the tastiness of chili is having it sit for a long time, and 4 hours is not nearly enough time.” They began walking in the direction of the apartment again, and Morgan took a second to appreciate the pleasantness of the day.
“So what should I expect of the cookout tonight?” he asked Y/N. She shrugged. “They’re pretty chill, generally. The guys with kids will usually bring them, and babies will be passed around until they get fussy. Svechy will get the younger kids really riled up, and someone will inevitably get pranked by him and his small army of hellions. Kat will probably get the fire pit in the backyard going, so we’ll have a fire to roast marshmallows in and stuff, someone will probably break out a guitar when everyone gets drunk enough, one of the guys will throw somebody into the pool and then everyone will be jumping in. The usual kind of stuff.” Morgan had to admit that it sounded really nice. Family-like even. “Yeah, it is kinda a family type of atmosphere.” Oops. “Did I say that out loud?” Y/N laughed. “Yeah, you did.” She touched his arm gently. “It’ll be nice. I’m sure it’s been stressful to start with a new team so close to the season, but these guys are great. Don’t be a dickhead, and you’ll fit in fine.” Morgan barked out a laugh at the last sentence, and Y/N joined him pretty quickly.
He threw an arm around her shoulders as they continued walking, squeezing lightly. “Thanks for being an impromptu hype man, Red Sox.” Y/N elbowed his side gently. “Red Sox?” He nodded. “I haven’t seen you without that hat for more than like 5 minutes since we met. It’s a fitting nickname.” She laughed, nodding. “I’m not questioning the nickname, I was just curious about where it came from.”
They reached their building as she spoke, and even Morgan’s athletic legs had trouble keeping up with Y/N’s shorter ones as she practically sprinted up the seven flights of stairs to the apartment. He was practically doubled over as she unlocked the door, and he almost collapsed onto the couch as she made her way into the kitchen almost unbothered. “How?” he wheezed at her. “I skate and exercise for a living and I’m dying.” Y/N turned to face him, and he noticed that she was indeed breathing a little heavier than usual. “I’m just wicked out of shape. I’m used to being out of breath. It doesn’t really bother me that much anymore.” Morgan groaned, laying his head back on the cushions. Y/N’s cat Bogey hopped onto his chest, purring loudly and nuzzling his chest.
“So I have to ask, Red Sox, why Bogey? It’s a strange name for a cat.” Y/N laughed as she continued to pull out everything she needed to cook. “His name is actually Bogaerts. He’s named after Xander Bogaerts, the Red Sox’ shortstop.” She began washing the peppers, throwing them all into a colander before pulling out a knife and cutting board. “He’s one of my favorite Red Sox players. Just a good dude. Also,” she gestured with her knife, “it’s a great name for a cat.” Morgan stared at Y/N as she cooked. She had turned on some music, some kind of old shit his grandparents would probably listen to, and she was dancing around the kitchen as she prepped. Bogey settled onto his chest, shoving his head into the crook of Morgan’s neck with another round of purrs.
Morgan woke up to Y/N shaking his shoulder. “Hey bud, you might wanna wake up and get ready to go. We’ve gotta leave in ten.” Bogey was no longer settled on his chest, and the chili Y/N had apparently finished while he was sleeping made the entire apartment smell fantastic. “Sorry I passed out on you. I don’t know what happened.” Y/N backed away when she noticed that he was awake, smiling gently. “It probably has something to do with me keeping you up all night, dude. Most people aren’t built to stay up all night.” Morgan stood with a groan, and felt his joints pop as he stretched. That was gonna feel awesome tomorrow. He took a second to look at Y/N, and realized that she had already changed, though it appeared all she had done was put on a bathing suit underneath her dress and exchanged her sneakers for flip flops. “Wear a bathing suit. You’ll regret it if you don’t.” With that Y/N turned, heading into the kitchen presumably to prepare the chili for transport.
Once Morgan was changed and Y/N deemed the chili ready for the drive they headed down to Y/N’s car. Morgan was put in charge of holding the chili, a responsibility he didn’t take lightly. Y/N would probably kill him if he spilled any of it. The trip to Svech and Kat’s house took almost half an hour. They lived outside the city, in a neighborhood full of very cookie-cutter houses. Y/N noticed Morgan looking, and spoke up before he could ask. “Most neighborhoods down here are like this. I don’t know why, but the whole same-house-different-colors aesthetic is very popular for neighborhoods down here. I grew up in one.” So that answered that question, then. “I prefer the older neighborhoods. Most of the houses are fixer-uppers now, but I’d rather fix up an old house than live in one of these. They aren’t built very well.”
They pulled up to Svech and Kat’s house as Y/N spoke, and it unsurprisingly looked just like the others. It was slate gray, with white trimming and a lawn that was way too well-manicured for them to be the ones taking care of it. There was a lot of noise coming from the backyard, and Y/N made a beeline for a door in the fence on the side of the house. She had taken the chili from Morgan, so he hurried forward to open the door for her. They were met with kids yelling and adults calling hello, and several very wet noses being shoved into his thighs. Morgan looked down to see three dogs staring up at him, two labs and a german shepard. Their tails were smacking into each other and the fence, and Y/N laughed as she shoved past them. “Jax! Kip! Mel! No!” A small blonde came hurrying over, yanking them back to help Y/N get the chili clear of death by puppies. Kat smiled up at Morgan, nodding her head in the direction of the guys. “They’ve been waiting for you. I think Doug has a beer with your name on it.” Morgan thanked her, heading over the where Hamilton and Svech were arguing about something.
“No, you idiot, dodgeball was definitely our best.” Hamilton snorted at the younger boy as he spoke, shaking his head vehemently. “The basketball one was the best for sure. I mean seriously buddy, we’re in the college basketball capital of America. Nowhere loves college basketball like Raleigh.” The other guys were shaking their heads at the two, though some were definitely egging them on with other suggestions. Morgan was sucked into the conversation effortlessly, giving his own input without another thought. “I’m gonna have to side with the kid here, captain. The dodgeball one was pretty ingenious.” Hamilton groaned, punching him on the shoulder good-naturedly. “I thought D-partners were supposed to stick together, Mo?” He clutched his chest jokingly. “I’m gonna have to ask Rod to separate us if I can’t trust you.” The other guys laughed, and it felt good to be sucked into the ebb and flow of the conversation so easily. He didn’t feel new; it honestly felt like he was sitting around with Brownie and Fred and the other guys that he’d known for years.
They talked for hours, and everything that Y/N had said would happen did. People began filtering out around ten, especially those with younger kids or kids who were at home with sitters. By the time the night ended, him and Y/N were the only ones left besides Kat and Svech. Y/N was sitting on Morgan’s shoulders while they battled with Kat and Svech in a game of chicken in the pool, a game in which him and Y/N were dominating. “You know,” Y/N said as she climbed onto his shoulders for another round, “if you pull something holding my ass up I’m not taking the fall for you when Rod goes postal.” Morgan pinched her calf. “Sweetheart you aren’t heavy enough for me to pull anything.” He jumped a few times for proof, and she threw her hands onto his chest in a panic. “Don’t do that!” Morgan laughed, throwing his head back to rest against her stomach. “Told you you weren’t too heavy.”
“Are you two gonna keep flirting all night, or are we gonna play?” Kat was smirking from her perch on Svech’s shoulders, and Morgan wasn’t sure who started stumbling through their words faster, him or Y/N. Kat just lifted an eyebrow and gestured Morgan forward wordlessly. Him and Y/N won that round, and the round after that, and then the last one as well before Kat finally announced that the boys had to travel the next day and they should all really get to sleep. She refused Y/N’s multiple offers to help clean up, and him and Y/N were quickly in her car to drive home, the now-empty pot of chili sitting on the floor at Morgan’s feet. Y/N turned on some kind of musical, blasting the sound way too loud as they began to drive. It took Morgan a second, but then the music sounded familiar. “Is this that Disney movie?” he yelled over the music. “The one with the troll or whatever?” Y/N turned down the song to look at him incredulously. “This is the Hunchback of Notre Dame! He is most definitely not a troll.” She gave Morgan another look before turning her eyes back to the road.
“They made this album when they wanted to take it to broadway. They had the cast recording done and everything, when Disney told them they weren’t going to give them enough of a budget to have a full choir. You can’t have music with Catholic choir influences like Hunchback does and not have a full choir, so they nixed the plans, but we still have the cast recording. It’s incredible.”
Morgan had to admit that it really was beautiful music, especially with the car stereo Y/N had. They listened to several of the songs as they drove, and Y/N pointed out the different parts that she particularly enjoyed. She sang along badly to every song, and nightly unforgettable car rides were quickly becoming a staple of Morgan’s life in Raleigh.
If the entire season was like this, then maybe everything would be okay.

23. Part 2
Rushing into the hotel in Santa Monica, I can never get peace even when I try “where is the meeting happening? Which room?” I shouted to the receptionist “the third meeting room” she said back, so that means it’s not the biggest room. It’s probably going to be just my dad and me then, he is a pain and it’s annoying. Robyn fell asleep again after rubbing her back, it was nice to do something for her finally, I love this living together shit. She fell asleep so peacefully, I mean she was groaning out as I was rubbing her back but she fell asleep so I came here. It’s not a short drive either, I need to get a office in Anaheim and work from there so then people can just come there. Opening the meeting room door “glad you can join us” my dad said, I sighed out seeing my lawyer “Wade” shaking my lawyer’ hand “what are you doing here? You not leaving people alone now dad” sitting down “we just need to go through some things” sure he does, he knows he cannot get information from my lawyer but he thinks I am going to allow him to know anything, only one can hope I guess “I just got called over, your dad said he wanted to go through some things which is why I am here” side eyeing my dad “what is your main goal here? I ain’t telling you shit, all you need to know is that I am making this business better so fuck everything else. Y’all just getting on my nerves” he is beginning to piss me off “y’all? Who else is getting on your nerves” he is actually just annoying my ass “did I ever tell you how I can’t wait for you to die, what do you want!? Tell me” I just want his ass to go “more money has been taken, I want to know now. With your lawyer here, what you doing. I want to know what he knows” I knew that, I knew he wanted to know that “so no, and also I bought a building. Don’t you fucking listen when I told you” maybe I told my mom this “what Maurice? Tell me?” he is stressing my ass out “I told you, I am helping people! The Davenport Programme, what do you know about helping people. I am helping the kids that can’t afford to do shit” my dad nodded his head “I heard and saw, but putting money into this does what?” he is twisted “it helps people, we are worth billions! How did you see?” I asked “word gets around, Google yourself. Socialite turned saviour now, so what else are you doing? Oh and Naomi is surveying the apartment complex you are making here, I think she need to have some say in it” looking at my lawyer, he knows everything “look at me” my dad said “yes?” turning to him “what are you really doing?” he has Naomi here again “securing my bag” I got up from the seat.
Pacing the room “so, tell me. When are you going to consult me? When were you going to let me help you? All I want is to be involved, I hear things from other people. I don’t like it, I want to be involved with you Maurice. You never did this thing, since when was I not allowed to know things from your lawyer. I feel like you’re going to stab me in the heart, you know you’re the only one to do this” sighing out heavily “just retire already, please. Stop this, it’s stupid. You sound stupid. Naomi and me are over! What ever you are trying to do is going to bite you in the ass, leave me be. We can get on but you just push me, just retire and give me what you said is mine” my dad is so cocky “yours? I have been nothing but truthful to you, I wish I never let you have free reign over shit, now you doing things here and there, that meeting next week is going to happen. It happens because of me, people know you because of me and I want you to know that” I chuckled “I am the better version of you, they know that too. Why can’t you stop this, work with me!” he is not listening “work with you? You won’t even allow me to get near you Maurice, you have shut down on me. Then why is it I cannot know what is happening from your lawyer, he is here now” shaking my head lightly “we all keep secrets, like you do too. You want to know what I am doing? I am trying to break away from this curse you call a family. You right dad, I am making what is mines. I am taking the money pot and I am using it, what are you going to do? All I am doing is building more hotels, that is it. Just retire dad, before this gets out of hand before we fall out forever please, just retire. Let me do this, let me do what I need to do. The hotel you own are wack, that is why they look old as shit, Wade back me up here. He is keeping those hotels under him are not doing as well as mine?” Wade doesn’t want to be involved but he is now “well putting it down the facts it’s true, it’s just a little back dated” he doesn’t see it “let’s just forget us competing, I don’t want to compete with you. I just want you to quietly retire and then stop worrying” I don’t want to fall out with my dad “it’s my way” punching the table in anger “it is my way Maurice, I won’t let you have it. Kill me then” walking off, he is raising my blood pressure.
There is no talking to him “why did you come here? To see my face? Is that it, don’t you have a fucking heart, why you doing this dad. Come on!” I am begging him to just back the fuck down “I came to know what you’re doing, this secretive shit is not sitting well with me. If we are doing good I want to celebrate with you. You know being at home with Joy, I said to her I am proud of him but I expected him to listen to me more. He is just like you, and I pointed at her” my dad is so fucking evil “you telling me you’re treating my mom bad? I do have a heart for you, I don’t know what draws me back to you but when it comes to her I will fuck you over, dad! Wade, you don’t ever let this man know what I am doing, he knows he needs me and he knows there is nothing! He can fucking do, you’re sat here in my fucking hotel! You fucking think I care that much to not kick you out!? Come on dad, don’t do it. Do not treat my mother bad” my phone started ringing, my dad laughs, he laughs and it gets me so angry “what!?” I shouted down the phone to Malik, not his fault “sorry, what is it Malik?” I felt a little bad “it’s ok but I have been trying to call your phone? What you been doing?” what is he even on “nothing, oh the signal here is a little bad so that will be the reason why, it’s lower down in the hotel and I don’t think I am connected to the internet my bad” walking off away from my dad “Jesus Christ, Robyn is practically in her bedroom about to give birth” I froze “what?” he said that too cool “don’t joke on me Malik, I swear. I am not in the mood” she can’t be “I am not lying, her parents are here. She called them but like she is in the bedroom and I am scared. Nobody could contact your phone, I am not lying Ma-” the speaking stopped and it started being all muffled “It’s Thomas, she is having a early birth” disconnecting the call, dragging open the door and running out “Maurice!” my dad shouted but I don’t fucking care.
Swaying in and out of traffic “come on, come on. Please baby Bonita, please do not come now!” I shouted to myself, this is a mess. Why is she coming now, I had this whole plan of the baby shower, the building I bought was going to be like a present from me, I was going to have it there and invite people, my sister is coming because I was going to do it. I feel like crying right now, this cannot happen and I cannot miss this birth. This is my first child and I will miss it, she is supposed to be in a fancy hospital and she is at home. If the police stop me now I don’t think I will stop, there will be a police chase going on here. I keep getting honked at but I don’t fucking care, my daughter is about to arrive. What if she is not well, I hope my baby is ok because she is early. Today is just stressful now, having to see my dad and now this. What if something is wrong, I am so scared right now.
Jogging up the steps to my home, pushing open the door “Hey, Maurice” Shawn said but I ran up the steps, I don’t have the time “Maurice, I have been trying to call you” Malik was quick to say but it’s not my priority right now “nobody ring the ambulance? What’s happening?” walking to the bedroom “Terry called the midwife, she said she is coming. Robyn is already too far along” What the fuck is this mess, pushing open the door “Robyn slowly now” closing the bedroom door, seeing Robyn stood up crying “I can’t mom” I feel awkward now what do I do “Robyn you need to lay down on the floor” seeing the amount of blankets placed on the floor and then the blood marks on the brand new flooring, I want to faint already “Maurice, you came, it’s too late. She has to have it now” Terry woke me out of my daze “I don’t know what happened” Robyn sobbed out, walking towards Robyn “let’s talk after, come. What needs to happen?” I can’t think of anything else, Terry is being very calm “need to help Robyn sit down, she can’t get back on the bed. It’s too high” Robyn grabbed my hand as she heaved out “I can feel it mom, her head. Why is she doing this now, it’s so painful” Terry walked over to Robyn “I understand, Robyn it’s too late. We can’t go anywhere, she is going to be here and you need to sit, ok? Maurice, slowly, lay her down” this is some scary shit right now.
“Perfect, lay against Maurice. You’re her support” Terry said as she looked between Robyn’ legs, this has to be the worlds most worst scenario to me. Robyn rested her head against my shoulder “I want to push!” she shouted out “then push Robyn, take deep breathes Robyn and push. I am not even joking, she is ready to come out Robyn” I haven’t even spoken a word, I am out of my zone right now. Terry pushed the tee back over her stomach, moving my head back as Robyn screamed out, that is some painful scream and I felt bad, like I cannot imagine how the pain is “oohhh baby, oh god” looking at the side of Robyn’ face “I can’t do it, I need something to move this pain away” Robyn cried out “I can’t do it” wrapping my arms around Robyn’ shoulder “I am here for you Robyn, you can do it. I know you can” I hate seeing Robyn like this, this hurts my heart “where is the midwife? Seriously? When was she called?” this is stupid, we paid for private care “she was called out, this just happened out of nowhere. Robyn called me and then we rushed over, we was going to go to the hospital and then she got out of bed and then she felt the baby’ head coming down, the midwife said don’t go anywhere” Robyn placed her hand on my arm as she screamed out again “Bonita, Mi Amor. You being so strong right now” Robyn looked over at me “I didn’t want this” resting my head at the side of her face “she wants to come, she wants to see us. It’s happening. I am here for you” she whimpered out.
My eyes bulged out out as Robyn gripped my fingers as she pushed “yes, bore down!” Terry said, I whimpered out as my fingers were being squeezed the fuck out of. Robyn’ body shook as she really gave it all, Robyn finally rested back “her head is out Robyn” that is when I look anywhere but there cause no, my soul can’t take such a thing “I am here, ok Robyn. I am here” the midwife is a little late now “the ambulance is coming, you’re doing great. Just one last push” the midwife just started spewing words out, peaking over Robyn’ shoulder and I saw the head. I breathed out looking away, I shouldn’t have looked “aaahhhh” I screamed out, my fingers are in real pain and my hearing has gone “help her out, are you her mother?” the midwife said to Terry “just gently help the baby out as she pushes from the body, Robyn just really push out. I know, I know. We just need the baby out now, that is the main thing” Robyn pushed and it did nothing “Robyn come on, you can do it. I know you in pain, look at me. Come on baby, in three” Robyn taking in deep breaths “one, two, three. Come on” Robyn pushed down again “I bought the building for the youth” trying to make forget the fact she has a whole baby coming out of her “she’s here, it’s ok rest” Robyn flopped back into me, like every ounce of energy has left Robyn. She let go of my hands “you did it baby, hey Bonita” Robyn lifted her head and at that moment I see my daughter for the very first time. The midwife placed her on top of Robyn’ stomach “why is she not breathing” the nurse used the towel and rubbed her back not saying a word “there we go” the sharpest cry came from her mouth “she needed to feel you, congratulations on your daughter” Robyn didn’t waste any type of time, it’s like she had life back in her. She bought the baby up closer “watch the cord” the midwife said, the rush of emotions hit me “hey baby” Robyn touched the side of her face, it’s like nothing else mattered in my life “you going to open those eyes for me” her tiny eyes fluttering open and then shut, my mind has been blown. She was in my balls and now look, she is a baby. Something I have always wanted “she’s so perfect, oh my god” resting my head on Robyn’ shoulder, I don’t fell like this is real to me.
I cannot take this moment in right now, it just seems so surreal. Rubbing my face, the Ambulance are here now but she really did that without any painkillers, like I would have said nope, keep the baby inside “keep the baby close to your chest as we take you out, she still needs checks and we need to get there safely” the midwife said, rubbing my face in shock “Maurice, the baby bag is done. You need to do one for me” she said as they moved her out, do what “Thomas it’s ok you can come in, Maurice you go. I will do this” Terry said “Thomas, our grandbaby is so beautiful” following behind leaving the bedroom “is she ok?” Malik asked “fine, my daughter is here. She’s really here, we talk after. Just make sure things are locked up here” Shawn got his hand out “father now, congratulations” hugging Shawn “I am in shock, I don’t know what to say” I am just speechless “let it sink in, you wasn’t ready for it yet” nodding my head, I am just everywhere.
They straight took Robyn and my daughter, and now I am stuck in this room on my own. I was supposed to mentally prepare myself for such a thing, I was so scared that Robyn was going to give up. She was so scared and in pain but as soon as the baby cried she acted like the shit was fine, I am still trying to digest what happened. From seeing the blood, seeing the baby’ head between Robyn’ legs, her screaming. Rubbing my face, that is traumatic. I just felt so scared, I just wanted Robyn to be ok. I think I am just in shock, you know. I can’t describe it at all, it’s just fear hit me “I think daddy looks like he has been through a lot” my head shot up seeing the nurses pushing Robyn into the room in the bed, she is on air but she looks a little high. I got up from the chair “is she ok? Robyn are you ok?” I asked, she looks so tired and out of it “she is ok, I am the head midwife that will be taking care of your wife” she said wife “what Robyn went through was traumatic with it being her first baby, she has done so well. She is in pain so we gave her something to calm her down, let her rest. She just needs some sleep” nodding my head “my daughter?” I asked “my baby” Robyn said all groggily, she even took her mask off “we will be taking her into care, just for a while. She is early, but healthy. She is breathing well, she is six pounds and two ounces which is a good weight. Before we put her in the incubator, we will do skin to skin now. She is healthy enough for it. We need to take precaution on the baby for her future” nodding my head “so my baby is ok yes?” I just need to know the women in my life are ok “sir she is fine, its’ what we need to do” I can take that.
“Awww, someone doesn’t like the cold. It’s ok, you just need to meet daddy” holy shit this bitch nurse woke her up “if she is awake then I will do it when she is asleep” I insisted “do it before I fall asleep” Robyn said, I wish her ass would fall asleep “ok, are you ready for her” the nurse so easily picked her up “don’t worry now, he will make you all warm. I am just going to place her right on your chest here” I am scared, this is crazy. I automatically placed my hand on the back of her head, even though I am sat down I felt protective that I needed too “when I said I wanted you here, I didn’t mean now” I choked out saying, I couldn’t help myself, I am an emotional person since being with Robyn “you’re the most beautiful thing I have seen and you’re mine, you’re actually everything I have prayed for” my heart is filled, I can feel my heart pounding against my chest, the love I am feeling. The feel of holding my daughter, this is my very own child “I am still so scared to move right now but all I know is I am going to love and protect you, I can’t believe you’re real and here” I sniffled, trying not to cry too much “I am in love, thank you Robyn” I said to Robyn looking up at her “she is the most perfect baby I have seen, I am going to protect you mi hermoso” letting my tears fall while staring down at my daughter.

These are America's 10 most expensive states to live in for 2021

Prices are rising for a wide array of goods and services as the U.S. confronts a level of inflation not seen in decades. Labor shortages, supply chain disruptions, and exploding demand as the pandemic wanes are all adding to pricing pressures. The situation is making it even harder to get by in America’s most expensive states, causing worries for consumers and companies alike.
Companies like to do business in states with a low cost of living, which can be attractive to workers and customers. CNBC’s annual America’s Top States for Business study considers cost of living as a factor in competitiveness, scoring states based on an index of prices for basic items. It is among our ten categories of competitiveness.
We score all 50 states based on an index of items from groceries to housing. Some states keep costs low and are appealing in a new era of pandemic-triggered migration. But not all.
The following are the ten states that were the most expensive to live in last year. We look at where prices have been heading in the volatile first half of this year versus one year ago, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Also listed are average prices for selected items, based on the 2020 Average Cost of Living Index by the Council for Community and Economic Research, C2ER.
10. New Jersey

While prices in Northern New Jersey can seem like a bargain compared to those across the Hudson River in New York, they don’t look nearly as good when you compare them to the rest of the country. A four-bedroom house in Bergen County will cost more than three times what it would cost in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
2021 Cost of Living score: 15 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, New York-Newark-Jersey City): Up 4.1%
Average home price (Bergen County): $615,738
Half gallon of milk: $2.43
Monthly energy bill: $186.37
9. Rhode Island

America’s smallest state has some big costs, like energy. In Providence, expect to pay nearly three times what you would pay in New Orleans to heat and cool your home. And a yoga class in Rhode Island will set you back roughly twice what it would in Anniston, Alabama.
2021 Cost of Living score: 14 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, Northeast Region): Up 4.6%
Average home price (Providence): $430,197
Half gallon of milk: $2.52
Monthly energy bill: $240.57
8. Connecticut

The Nutmeg State has some of the highest prescription drug prices in the country. C2ER researchers found insulin costing roughly twice as much in Stamford, Connecticut as it does in parts of Tennessee. And a visit to the doctor costs nearly twice what it would in Tupelo, Mississippi.
2021 Cost of Living score: 12 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, Northeast Region): Up 4.6%
Average home price (Stamford): $615,372

Monthly energy bill: $261.22
7. Maryland

The Old Line State can’t seem to hold the line on prices. A new home in Bethesda, Maryland, will cost roughly three times what you would pay in Jefferson City, Missouri. And get ready for some sticker shock at the grocery store, where you will pay twice the price for a loaf of bread as you would in St. Paul, Minnesota.
2021 Cost of Living score: 11 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, Baltimore-Columbia-Towson): Up 4.5%
Average home price (Bethesda): $854,529

Monthly energy bill: $193.98
6. Alaska

Residents of the Last Frontier face unique challenges, confronted with extreme weather, long winter nights, and some truly astronomical Alaska living costs. In Fairbanks, expect to pay more than five times the energy bill you would pay in Oklahoma City. Even a can of tuna will cost you nearly twice what it would in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
2021 Cost of Living score: 9 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, Urban Alaska): Up 6.2%
Average home price (Juneau): $581,906

5. Massachusetts

Food prices in the Massachusetts are almost high enough to spark a revolution. A dozen eggs in Boston will cost twice as much as it would in Joplin, Missouri. You’ll pay around 25% more for a pizza than you would in Burlington, North Carolina. And your apartment rent will be about four times what it would be in Monroe, Louisiana.
2021 Cost of Living score: 8 out of 175 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, New England Region): Up 4%
Average home price (Boston): $744,522

Monthly energy bill: $233.86
4. Oregon

Oregonians love their coffee, and at these prices, they had better. It is more than 40% more expensive in Portland, Oregon, than it is in Portage, Michigan. Expect your monthly house payment to be about twice what it would be if you lived in Enid, Oklahoma.
2021 Cost of Living score: 6 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, West Region): Up 5.1%
Average home price (Portland): $623,494
Half gallon of milk: $2.12
Monthly energy bill: $143.85
3. California

Roughly 75% of the nation’s leafy green vegetables are grown in California, yet a head of lettuce costs about 30% more in San Francisco than it does in Fayetteville, Arkansas. California produces more milk than any other state, yet it costs nearly 50% more here than in Arizona. The Golden State lives up to its name when it comes to prices, including the highest gasoline taxes in the country, according to the American Petroleum Institute.
2021 Cost of Living score: 5 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim): Up 4%
Average home price (San Francisco): $1,362,163
Half gallon of milk: $2.83
Monthly energy bill: $267.84

If you can make it here, you’ll make it anywhere, because almost every place else is cheaper to live than New York. The average home price in Manhattan — $2.2 million based on 2020 figures — is easily the nation’s highest, and more than ten times the price in Brownsville, Texas. Even upstate in Albany you’ll pay twice what you would pay in Brownsville. And it’s not just housing. A box of corn flakes will cost you twice what it would in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
2021 Cost of Living score: 3 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, New York-Newark-Jersey City): Up 4.1%
Average home price (Manhattan): $2,227,806

1. Hawaii
A trip to the supermarket in Honolulu is practically an exercise in high finance. Expect to pay more than $5 for a loaf of bread, or twice what it would cost in parts of Kansas. A five-pound sack of potatoes will cost you four times what it costs in Kokomo, Indiana. Home prices are through the roof, and so is basic maintenance, like getting your washing machine repaired. That will cost more than twice what it would in McAllen, Texas. There may be no more breathtaking a place than the Aloha State, but prices in Hawaii, America’s most expensive state, will take your breath away, too.

In a park in the middle of a leafy, bohemian neighborhood where homes list for close to $1 million, a tractor's massive claw scooped up the refuse of the homeless - mattresses, tents, wooden frames, a wicker chair, an outdoor propane heater. Workers in masks and steel-shanked boots plucked used needles and mounds of waste from the underbrush.
Just a day before, this corner of Ravenna Park was an illegal home for the down and out, one of 400 such encampments that have popped up in Seattle's parks, under bridges, on freeway medians and along busy sidewalks. Now, as police and social workers approached, some of the dispossessed scurried away, vanishing into a metropolis that is struggling to cope with an enormous wave of homelessness.
That struggle is not Seattle's alone. A homeless crisis of unprecedented proportions is rocking the West Coast, and its victims are being left behind by the very things that mark the region's success: soaring housing costs, rock-bottom vacancy rates and a roaring economy that waits for no one. All along the coast, elected officials are scrambling for solutions.
"I've got economically zero unemployment in my city, and I've got thousands of homeless people that actually are working and just can't afford housing," said Seattle City Councilman Mike O'Brien. "There's nowhere for these folks to move to. Every time we open up a new place, it fills up."
The rising numbers of homeless people have pushed abject poverty into the open like never before and have overwhelmed cities and nonprofits. The surge in people living on the streets has put public health at risk, led several cities to declare states of emergency and forced cities and counties to spend millions - in some cases billions - in a search for solutions.
San Diego now scrubs its sidewalks with bleach to counter a deadly hepatitis A outbreak that has spread to other cities and forced California to declare a state of emergency last month. In Anaheim, home to Disneyland, 400 people sleep along a bike path in the shadow of Angel Stadium. Organizers in Portland lit incense at a recent outdoor food festival to cover up the stench of urine in a parking lot where vendors set up shop.
Homelessness is not new on the West Coast. But interviews with local officials and those who serve the homeless in California, Oregon and Washington - coupled with an Associated Press review of preliminary homeless data - confirm it's getting worse. People who were once able to get by, even if they suffered a setback, are now pushed to the streets because housing has become so expensive.
All it takes is a prolonged illness, a lost job, a broken limb, a family crisis. What was once a blip in fortunes now seems a life sentence.
"Most homeless people I know aren't homeless because they're addicts," said Tammy Stephen, 54, who lives at a homeless encampment in Seattle. "Most people are homeless because they can't afford a place to live."
Among the AP's findings:
— Official counts taken earlier this year in California, Oregon and Washington show 168,000 homeless people in the three states, according to an AP tally of every jurisdiction in those states that reports homeless numbers to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. That is 19,000 more than were counted two years ago, although the numbers may not be directly comparable because of factors ranging from the weather to new counting methods.
— During the same period, the number of unsheltered people in the three states - defined as someone sleeping outside, in a bus or train station, abandoned building or vehicle - has climbed 18 percent to 105,000.
— Rising rents are the main culprit. The median one-bedroom apartment in the San Francisco Bay Area is significantly more expensive than it is in the New York City metro area, and apartments in San Francisco are listed at a higher price than those in Manhattan.
— Since 2015, at least 10 cities or municipal regions in California, Oregon and Washington - and Honolulu, as well - have declared states of emergency due to the rise of homelessness, a designation usually reserved for natural disasters.
"What do we want as a city to look like? That's what the citizens here need to decide," said Gordon Walker, head of the regional task force for the homeless in San Diego, where the unsheltered homeless population has spiked by 18 percent in the past year. "What are we going to allow? Are we willing to have people die on the streets?"
———
With alarming frequency, the West Coast's newly homeless are people who were able to survive on the margins - until those margins moved.
For years, Stanley Timmings, 62, and his 61-year-old girlfriend, Linda Catlin, were able to rent a room in a friend's house on their combined disability payments.
Last spring, that friend died of colon cancer and the couple was thrust on Seattle's streets.
Timmings used their last savings to buy a used RV for $300 and spent another $300 to register it. They bought a car from a junk yard for $275.
Now, the couple parks the RV near a small regional airport and uses the car to get around.
They have no running water and no propane for the cook stove. They go to the bathroom in a bucket and dump it behind a nearby business. They shower and do laundry at a nonprofit and buy water at a grocery depot. After four months, the stench of human waste inside the RV is overwhelming. Every inch of space is crammed with their belongings: jugs of laundry detergent, stacks of clothes, pots and pans, and tattered paperback novels. They are exhausted, scared and defeated, with no solution in sight.
"Between the two of us a month, we get $1,440 in disability. We can't find a place for that," he said. "Our income is (about) $17,000 ... a year. That puts us way out of the ballpark, not even close. It might have been enough but anymore, no. It's not."
A new study funded by the real estate information firm Zillow and conducted by the University of Washington found a strong link between rising housing prices and rising homelessness numbers. A 5 percent rent increase in Los Angeles, for example, would mean about 2,000 more homeless people there, the authors said.
Nationally, homelessness has been trending down, partly because governments and nonprofit groups have gotten better at moving people into housing. That's true in many West Coast cities, too, but the flow the other direction is even faster. And on the West Coast, shelter systems are smaller.
"If you have a disability income, you make about $9,000 a year and renting a studio in Seattle is about $1,800 a month and so that's twice your income," said Margaret King, director of housing programs for DESC, a nonprofit that works with Seattle's homeless.
"So everybody who was just hanging on because they had cheap rent, they're losing that ... and they wind up outside. It's just exploded."
Nowhere is that more evident than California's Silicon Valley, where high salaries and a tight housing market have pushed rent out of reach for thousands. In ever-shifting communities of the homeless, RVs and cars cluster by the dozens in the city where Google built its global headquarters and just blocks from Stanford University.
Ellen Tara James-Penney, a lecturer at San Jose State University, has been sleeping out of a car for about a decade, ever since she lost her housing while an undergraduate at the school where she now teaches four English courses, a job that pays $28,000 a year. Home is an old Volvo.
"I've basically been homeless since 2007, and I'm really tired," she said. "Really tired."
She actually got her start in the high tech industry, before being laid off during the tech meltdown of the early 2000s. Like many who couldn't find work, she went to college, accumulating tens of thousands of dollars in student debt along the way.
Now 54, she grades papers and prepares lesson plans in her car. Among her few belongings is a pair of her grandmother's fancy stiletto pumps, a reminder to herself that "it's not going to be like this forever."
Increased housing costs aren't just sweeping up low-income workers: The numbers of homeless youth also is rising.
A recent count in Los Angeles, for example, found that those ages 18 to 24 were the fastest-growing homeless group by age, up 64 percent, followed by those under 18. Los Angeles and other cities have made a concerted effort to improve their tallies of homeless youth, which likely accounts for some of the increase.
One of the reasons is the combined cost of housing and tuition, said Will Lehman, policy supervisor at Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. A recent study by the University of Wisconsin found that one in five Los Angeles Community College District students is homeless, he said.
"They can pay for books, for classes but just can't afford an apartment. They're choosing to prioritize going to school," Lehman said. "They don't choose their situation."
———
Michael Madigan opened a new wine bar in Portland a few years ago overlooking a ribbon of parks not far from the city's trendy Pearl District.
Business was good until, almost overnight, dozens of homeless people showed up on the sidewalk. A large encampment on the other side of the city had been shut down, and its residents moved to the park at his doorstep.
"We literally turned the corner one day ... and there were 48 tents set up on this one block that hadn't been there the day before," he said.
Madigan's business dropped 50 percent in four months and he closed his bar. There are fewer homeless people there now, but the campers have moved to a bike path that winds through residential neighborhoods in east Portland, prompting hundreds of complaints about trash, noise, drug use and illegal camping.
Rachel Sterry, a naturopathic doctor, lives near that path and sometimes doesn't feel safe when she's commuting by bike with her 1-year-old son. Dogs have rolled in human feces in a local park; recent improvements she's made to her small home are overshadowed by the line of tents and tarps a few dozen yards from her front door, she said.
"I have to stop and get off my bike to ask people to move their card game or their lounge chairs or their trash out of the way when I'm just trying to get from point A to point B," she said. "If I were to scream or get hurt, nobody would know."
For Seattle resident Elisabeth James, the reality check came when a homeless man forced his way into a glass-enclosed ATM lobby with her after she swiped her card to open the door for after-hours access. After a few nerve-wracking minutes, the man left the lobby but stayed outside, banging on the glass. Police were too busy to respond so James called her husband, who scared the man away and walked her home. The man, she believes, just wanted to get out of the rain.
A neighborhood pocket park has become a flashpoint, too: When James took her 2-year-old grandchild there, she saw people injecting heroin.
"I'm not a NIMBY person, but I just think that we can do so much more," said James, who founded an activist group called Speak Out Seattle last year. "I wanted to do something that was effective, that brought frustrated people together to find solutions. We're spending a lot of money to house people and we're getting a bigger problem."
The crisis is not limited to large metropolises. In Oregon City, a suburban, working-class town of 36,000 people, the police department this summer added a full-time position for a homeless outreach officer after roughly half the calls concerned trash, trespassing, human waste and illegal encampments.
The city has no overnight shelters and never had a significant homeless population until about three years ago.
On a recent fall day, officer Mike Day tromped into a greenbelt across from a strip mall to check on a man he recently connected with a counselor, calmed an intoxicated man and arranged emergency care for a man who was suicidal.
"How many social workers have you met that go into the woods to follow up with the homeless population and to help with mental health? This is a bit of a hybrid position, certainly, and maybe it's not exactly the role of a police officer - but it's a creative approach to find a solution to the problem," he said.
The question was, "What can we do differently? Because right now, it's not working."
———
All along the West Coast, local governments are scrambling to answer that question - and taxpayers are footing the bill.
Voters have approved more than $8 billion in spending since 2015 on affordable housing and other anti-homelessness programs, mostly as tax increases. Los Angeles voters, for example, approved $1.2 billion to build 10,000 units of affordable housing over a decade to address a ballooning homeless population that's reached 34,000 people within city limits.
Seattle spent $61 million on homeless-related issues last year, and a recent budget proposal would increase that to $63 million. Four years ago, the city spent $39 million on homelessness. Sacramento has set a goal of moving 2,000 people off the streets in the next three years and may place a housing bond before voters in 2018.
Appeals for money have angered residents who see tent encampments growing in their cities despite more spending.
"Those are like whack-a-mole because they just sprout up and then they disappear and then they sprout up somewhere else," said Gretchen Taylor, who helped found the Neighborhood Safety Alliance of Seattle in 2016.
Seattle is initiating competitive bidding among nonprofit organizations for city dollars going toward homelessness programs. It's also pouring money into "rapid rehousing," a strategy that houses people quickly and then provides rental assistance for up to 18 months.
Like San Francisco, Seattle has started opening 24-hour, "low-barrier" shelters that offer beds even if people are abusing drugs, have a pet or want to sleep together as a couple. But the city's first 24-hour shelter has only 75 beds, and turnover is extremely low.
A team of specially trained police officers and social workers has also been visiting homeless camps to try to place people in shelter. After repeated visits - and with 72 hours of notice - the city cleans out the camps and hauls away abandoned belongings.
These efforts are starting to yield results, although the overall number of homeless people continues to swell.
Nearly 740 families moved into some type of shelter between October 2016 and August 2017, and 39 percent of the people contacted by the new police teams wind up sheltered, according a recent city homeless report. That's an improvement from a 5 percent shelter rate 18 months ago, said Sgt. Eric Zerr, who leads that effort.
But the approach has its detractors. The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit alleging the sweeps violate the constitutional protections against unreasonable search and seizure. And a debate is raging about whether the sweeps are necessary "tough love" or a cruel policy that criminalizes poverty in a city with a reputation for liberalism.
"When a city can't offer housing, they should not be able to sweep that spot unless it's posing some sort of significant health and safety issue," said Sara Rankin, a professor with the Homeless Rights Advocacy Project at the Seattle University School of Law.
"If someone doesn't have a place to go, you can't just continue to chase them from place to place."
———
Above all, the West Coast lacks long-term, low-income housing for people like Ashley Dibble and her 3-year-old daughter.
Dibble, 29, says she has been homeless off and on for about a year, after her ex-boyfriend squandered money on his car and didn't pay the rent for three months. Evicted, Dibble says she lived in the back of a moving truck and with several different friends around Seattle before winding up on the streets. She sent her toddler to live with the girl's paternal grandparents in Florida.
She and her new boyfriend were sleeping under tarps near Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners, when an outreach team referred them to a new shelter. Now, Dibble talks to her daughter daily by phone and is trying to find a way back into housing so she can bring her home.
With an eviction on her record and little income, no one will rent to her.
"I've had so many doors slammed in my face, it's ridiculous," Dibble said, wiping away tears.
Seattle's DESC operates 1,200 so-called "permanent supportive housing units" -housing for the mentally ill or severely addicted who can't stay housed without constant help from case managers, counselors and rehabilitation programs. The nonprofit completes a new building every 18 months and they immediately fill; at any given time, there are only about eight to 10 units free in the whole city - but 1,600 people qualify.
Among this population, "almost nobody's going to get housing because there isn't any," DESC's Margaret King said. "It doesn't really matter."
There is so little housing, and so much despair. Nonprofit workers with decades of experience are shocked by the surge in homeless people and in the banality of the ways they wound up on the streets.
"It's a sea of humanity crashing against services, and services at this point are overwhelmed, literally overwhelmed. It's catastrophic," said Jeremy Lemoine, an outreach case manager with REACH, a Seattle homeless-assistance program. "It's a refugee crisis right here in the States, right here under our noses."
"I don't mean to sound hopeless. I generate hope for a living for people - that there is a future for them - but we need to address it now."
